THE TRUTH

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

There are many truths that are not vital and essential to salvation. There

are many truths we can know and not be saved. It is The Truth which saves. The Lord Jesus Christ is The Truth. The whole testimony of God concerning Christ is The Truth. The work of the Holy Spirit in the heart is to work in us The Truth. The knowledge of The Truth may be small at first, but it will grow, and by it we will be fully instructed in the way of salvation.

…be of the same mind in the Lord. –Php 4:2-3

As true yoke fellows united together by Christ our Master, as citizens of the same heavenly Jerusalem under one Sovereign, as members one with another in the same body under one Head, with our names each written in the Lamb’s book of life, let us labor together to send forth the gospel of Christ. When we were lost Christ came and preached peace to us and saved us by his grace. To do that, Christ assembled a body of believers of one mind to labor together to send the gospel to us. Now, Christ has fit us together. Let us be of the same mind to make spreading the gospel of our great Savior our chief business in this world.

Believers see through a glass darkly. There are many, many things that God has made us know, which we cannot explain, yet we believe. But that is what Christ says we are to do. For instance, Christ said, “…know and believe that the Father is in me and I in him” (Jn 10:38). Matthew Henry wrote, “This we must know; not know and explain (for we cannot by searching find it out to perfection) but know and believe it; acknowledging and adoring the depth, when we cannot find the bottom.”

“The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ” (Jn 1:17). The old covenant which Moses ministered is called, “The ministration of death; the ministration of condemnation; that which is done away.” The new testament which came by Christ is called “the ministration of the spirit; the ministration of righteousness; that which remaineth” (2 Cor 3:7-11). The old was written on tablets of stone; the new “with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.” The old was glorious but had no glory with respect to the “glory that excelleth.” When the Spirit turns the heart to Christ, beholding the glory of the Lord, we behold the glory that excelleth—“for all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God.” (2 Cor 3:16-18; 1:20).

Chastisement, Yes – Punishment, No

It will help you who are God’s children to bear your trials and afflictions patiently, if you can understand that God is not punishing you for some sin in your life, either before or after conversion. God punished our sins in his Son, our Substitute, to the full satisfaction of his justice. He will never punish them in us. Punishment is the satisfaction of justice, anger, and wrath. Where there is law and justice, punishment is essential as often as the law is broken. But since God punished our offenses in his Son, justice will not allow him to punish us. Chastisement, on the other hand, is the correction of a child by his loving Father. Chastisement is not for the satisfaction of anger, but for the benefit of the child. The Lord chastens all of his children, but he punishes none of them (Hebrews 12:5-11).

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH AND REPENTANCE

Paul, when giving his farewell words to the faithful elders of Ephesus, he reminded them of his ministry when he first came among them. He said, “Serving the Lord with humility of mind, keeping back nothing that was profitable, preaching to the Jew and to the Gentile repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:20-21).

Consider for a moment how important faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and repentance toward God is. Our Lord said, “Except that you repent you shall perish” (Mark 13:1-5). Again He said, “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6). What does the scripture teach us about faith and repentance? Here are seven things to remember.

1.      Both faith and repentance are sovereign gifts of God given to the sinner freely by His grace (Acts 5:29-31; 11:18; Eph. 2:8-9; Phi. 1:29).

2.      Both faith and repentance are the sovereign commands of God (Acts 17:29-31; 1John 3:23).

3.      Both faith and repentance own, bow, believe and submit to the true Lord Jesus Christ, the true and living God and His gospel of His grace (2Tim. 2:25; Titus 1:1).

4.      Both faith and repentance are not isolated experiences of the believer, but rather a life-long state of being that is both powerful, permanent and perpetual. (John 5:24; Heb. 12:2; 1Pet. 2:4).

5.      Both faith and repentance are not the ground or cause of our salvation but rather the fruit of salvation in Christ Jesus (Gal. 5:22; 1John 5:1).

6.      Both faith and repentance come together at the same time not apart from each other. Where you find a broken and repentant heart you find a believing heart. Read these testimonies from the word (Psa. 51:1-10; Rom. 7:18-24; Phil. 3:7-9).

7.      As repentance grows so does faith. As faith grows so does repentance. The deeper our conviction of sin, the greater our esteem of Christ, who put away our sin (Heb. 9:26). The deeper our faith grows in Christ, as we see more of His beauty (S. Sol. 5:26), the more we see the repulsiveness of our own depravity (Isa. 6:5; Job 42:5-6; 1Tim. 1:15).
