Title: Shiloh

Text: Genesis 49: 8-10

Date: May 9, 2010

Place: SGBC, NJ

God the Father speaks of his Son, his Christ, throughout the scripture.  Such is the case in our text this morning. In our text, Jacob is dying. He has called his twelve sons.  The one son who we will focus on this morning is Judah.

Proposition: What Jacob says here, he says of Christ Jesus the Lord.  Judah is a type of Christ Jesus.

I. CHRIST JESUS IS THE ONE WHOM HIS BRETHREN SHALL PRAISE.

Genesis 49: 8: Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise:

The name Judah means praise.

Genesis 29: 35  And she [Leah] conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah.

All who are born of the Spirit of God shall praise the Lord Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, and King! Christ alone shall have our praise.

I Corinthians 1: 29: That no flesh should glory in his presence. 30: But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

Psalm 115: 1: Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.

By praising Christ alone we are praising the fullness of the Godhead in one body--Christ Jesus.

Col 1:19  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;…2:9  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

We praise him for:

  • The excellencies of his Person!
  • The wonders of redemption!
  • The abundance of his grace!
  • The goodness of his providence!

II. CHRIST JESUS IS VICTORIOUS OVER ALL HIS ENEMIES.

V8: Thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies;

When the hand is on the neck--the enemy can be destroyed in an instant.

When Christ was made sin, he put away our sin. He makes his people the righteousness of God in him, he conquered our enemies.   He has always and is now--reigning supremely over all creation. His name is Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins. There is no enemy of Christ, or of his people, that shall not be finally destroyed.

Hebrews 1: 13  But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?...12  But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13: From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14: For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

I Corinthians 15: 25: For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26: The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

III. GOD THE FATHER'S CHILDREN SHALL BOW DOWN BEFORE CHRIST JESUS.

V8:…Thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.

As a type of this, and a foreshadowing of it, the whole nation of Israel bowed before kings David and Solomon.

Yet, Christ is Lord of all.

He is God in human flesh.  God the Father will have all to bow to his Son and declare him Lord of lords and King of kings.

Romans 14: 9: For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

All God's elect children shall bow to him in faith.  True faith is confessing Christ to be my Lord, my King Savior.

Romans 10: 9: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

And all--even his enemies--shall bow and confess him to be Lord.

Philippians 2: 9: Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11: And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

IV. CHRIST JESUS IS THE POWER AND WISDOM OF GOD FOR HIS PEOPLE.

V9: Judah is a lion’s whelp

Our Lord is compared to a young lion.

1. The lion is "king of the jungle"--Christ is King.

2. The lion is strong--Christ is the Power.

3. The lion is wise--Christ is the Wisdom.

4. The lion walks where he wants and does what he wants and none can stop him--that is Christ our Lord.

V9: From the prey, my son, thou art gone up.

Christ Jesus, the Son of God, came into this jungle and having redeemed his people, he is now ascended to the Father--gone up.

V9: He stooped down!

Philippians 2: 5: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

2 Corinthians 8: 9: For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

V9: He couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

As a wise lion--an old lion--He won the victory--"it is finished" He is now seated in glory--who shall rouse him up?

Revelation 5:5: And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

V. THE SCEPTRE SHALL NOT DEPART FROM CHRIST JESUS THE LORD.

Genesis 49: 10: The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come;

God assured Jacob and all his true children, that the government of earthly Judah would continue until Christ, the Messiah came.  Christ came through the lineage of Judah. Proof that Jesus Christ is the Messiah is that the government of earthly Judah has ceased!

But the greater meaning to us now is--He is King, the Government is on his Shoulder and the Government shall never depart from him--nor shall he cease to give pastors after his own heart to declare his gospel--till he come again for us who are his.

Shiloh means "Son"--we are talking about God's Son the King:

Isaiah 9: 6: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7: Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Shiloh means “the one to whom it belongs".

Ezekiel 21: 25: And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end, 26: Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. 27: I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him.

All--thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Col. 1:14-19).

Shiloh means “peace”--the same as “Salem, King of Peace.” Christ is our Peace. He made peace for us by the blood of his cross. And we have peace by faith in him

Romans 5: 1: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Shiloh means “prosperous”--concerning Christ, “the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand” (Isa. 53:10).

VI. UNTO CHRIST SHALL ALL THE ELECT OF GOD SHALL BE GATHERED.

V10:…Unto Him shall the gathering of the people be.

Unto Him shall the gathering be--to a Person and He shall gather and bind us to him.

John 10: 14: I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. 15: As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16: And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

John 12:32: And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

His Foal is each child of God for whom he died and he is the Vine.

Genesis 49: 11: Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine

Like that ass's colt he rode into Jerusalem, which had never been ridden, when Christ takes dominion in the heart he tames his child. He binds us to him by his irresistible grace and constraining love.

He does so by making us to behold him upon the cross as our Substitute washing his garments in blood--treading the wine press of God's fury alone

Genesis 49: 11:…he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:

We behold his eyes red with wine, that is, we behold him willingly redeeming his people.  We see his holiness and faithfulness as white as milk, even unto death.

Genesis 49: 12: His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

His gospel is wine for men and milk for babes.

Application:

1. He makes his children praise him.

2. He makes us to trust him who has won the victory!

3. He makes us to bow and confess he is indeed Lord.

4. He makes us to rejoice that he is the Power and Wisdom of God--the Lion which hath prevailed!

5. He makes us to rest in his government and rejoice in his law (his gospel) until he returns.

6. He makes us to continually gather unto him--"to whom coming".

As he made you to behold HIM this morning?  Has he drawn you to HIM this morning?  O, may he give you grace to do so.  He says,

Mt 11:29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

We shall never stop praising him, even forever, in the new heaven and the new earth:

Revelation 5: 9: And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10: And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
