Matthew
5: 13: Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be
cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Believer, Christ says you are the salt of
the earth. It means believers are the reason
this earth is preserved. Salt represents
covenant in the scriptures. (Le 2: 13)
We are exhorted to “Let your speech be
alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer
every man.” (Col 4: 6)
Yet, brethren, there is no power in us to
persevere or preserve ourselves, let alone the earth or any sinner in it. Christ
is our Covenant by whom we are salted and preserved. (Jude 1:1; Is 42: 6; 49: 8) It is Christ alone who is the Grace of whom
we speak and the Savor with which our speech is salted. If the glory of God in Christ Jesus is not all
to us, in our purpose for gathering to worship, and in the message we set forth
before the world then we have lost our Savor and have absolutely nothing with
which to salt the earth. Wherever Christ
is not All and in All, the people are good for nothing but to be cast out and
trodden under foot of men. If we forsake
the Preserver there remains no more preservative for us. Christ says, “it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot
of men.” (Heb 10: 26; 2 Pet 2: 20-21)
How thankful we are that every elect,
regenerated child Christ has purchased with his blood are kept by that covenant
of salt which is everlasting and unchanging in Christ’s precious blood. Let us
rejoice that we are preserved by the Holy Spirit until the day when we shall be
fully redeemed into heavens glory! (Eph 1: 13; 4: 30; Jn 6: 39; 10: 28)
Therefore let us cling ever closer to
Christ so that by Christ alone, the gospel we send forth will continue to be “unto
God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved and in them that perish. To
the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of
life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?” (2 Cor 2: 15-16)
